How to Keep Your House Clean During Winters

Winter is fast approaching and cold weather is already setting in. However, the harsh weather conditions don’t exempt you from keeping your house clean and doing everything you can to maintain a tidy and hygienic home atmosphere. Here are five suggestions that you can use as guiding points in your winter home cleaning to make the job a bit more manageable.

Cleaning Your Fireplace

Your fireplace will be in use throughout the winter, and that will mean a lot of ash and soot collected on both its inside and outside parts. You should clean your fireplace on a regular basis, so that the soot and ashes don’t spread throughout your house and make your furnishings dirty. You can use a specialised fireplace vacuum cleaner to vacuum up the ashes and then wipe the door, outer parts and surroundings of the fireplace with a damp rag. This will keep soot at bay and your fireplace will look clean and cosy, all ready for the holidays.


Deep Cleaning Carpets and Floors

Carpets and floors should not be neglected during the winter months. With all the snow, dirt and mud outside, your floors and floor coverings will constantly be subjected to a lot of dirt, so floor and carpet cleaning should be given a top spot on your list of domestic cleaning chores. You can minimise the damage by introducing a ‘no shoes’ policy at home, but nevertheless, you should clean your carpets and floors regularly to prevent dirt build up and damage.


Dusting

Your house can get quite dusty in wintertime, as the warm dry air contributes to dust build up and its circulation in the home atmosphere. That is why you should do your best to keep dust at bay in the winter by dusting at least once a week. Don’t forget to dust the hidden nooks and crannies too, such as windowsills, blinds, skirting boards, on top of cupboards, etc. Wipe lighting fixtures too, as they are prone to collecting dust which may then spread through your rooms. You should also regularly vacuum air ducts to prevent the dust from circulating through your air conditioning system.


Cleaning Windows

You shouldn’t postpone window cleaning for the spring just because the weather outside is bad. Especially if you often light candles at your home or use your fireplace regularly, chances are your windows will be covered with a thin film of ash or soot which will prevent light from entering the room. So, regularly clean at least the indoor parts of your windows. Use soapy water or your preferred window cleaner to wipe the soot away and then buff your windows with a soft, lint-free cloth for a streak-free finish and a nice shine.


Cleaning Your Kitchen Ceiling

The kitchen ceiling will easily get covered with a greasy film if you often cook in your kitchen. Even if you have an exhaust hood and you turn it on every time you are cooking, that won’t prevent grease and dirt from building up on your ceiling. So, make cleaning the ceiling a part of your regular kitchen cleaning routine to keep your kitchen in pristine condition. Use a soft cloth or sponge and soapy water to wipe the ceiling, but don’t soak the cloth – just dampen it to prevent any damage to the ceiling paint. Also, make sure you use a sturdy ladder for reaching the ceiling and don’t do this while you are alone at home so as to prevent injuries and have someone nearby in case you fall.
